Surname changes

Wife’s GGF born 1851, was a McDaniel. His surname changed to McDonald sometime between 1904 and 1910, and we have no idea of the reason for the change. He was Benjamin Franklin McD??, died in 1915, and is buried in the Pifer Mountain cemetery. Would appreciate any assistance.
