A very good article about locks and dams in West Virginia. Perhaps not realized by many West Virginians is the latest upgrading of some of these facilities seem to have been extreme, and probably unnecessary. For example, the Marmet Locks project which began during the 1990’s and now completed, destroyed an entire community, but tonnage through the new facility today is less than one-half of that prior to the upgrade. It is unlikely that the new facility will ever see the river traffic it was designed for.
