My Grandfather, Squire Jenkins Jones of Romance, West Virginia Spoke of being present during the Hanging. He said it started out like a Holiday with Ice cream, lemonade, food and sweets. Much like an all day dinner on the ground as they said back then. Yes, the crowd was quite large the biggest one he had ever been to.

Then the hanging took place, seems there was a problem with the drop and the man’s neck did not break. He hung there, kicked for some time and the crowd become up set and started to cry and shout. Some became ill and sick at their stomach . His final comment was, I made a vow to never do any thing that would get him hanged and he kept that vow till his death at a hundred and five years from natural causes.
