Shen Yun 2015: Reviving 5,000 Years of Civilization

In Shen Yun performances, themes like spiritual devotion, the benevolence of gods, good and evil, retribution, and the search for the meaning of life have appeared in dance stories and lyrics.
Shen Yun Performing Arts presents classical Chinese dance, song, and music with choreography ranging from grand processions to legions of thunderous drums, with gorgeously costumed dancers moving in synchronized patterns.

Archives and History Tuesday Lecture: Land Grants in West Virginia

On Tuesday, February 3, 2015, Russell Rollyson will present “Land Grants in West Virginia” in the Archives and History Library of the Culture Center in Charleston. The program will begin at 6:00 p.m. and is free and open to the public.
The land grant was the primary means by which early European and colonial settlement occurred in West Virginia. The British Crown and colonial government issued land grants to individuals or companies in return for improving land by settlement and as rewards for military or other service. The land grant records in the West Virginia Archives and History provide information about such topics as land titles, immigration, and family relationship found in no other place.
Russell Rollyson has lived his entire life within West Virginia. His paternal side of his family helped settle Braxton County and there is a town in Braxton County named after them. He attended Virginia Tech and the University of Charleston graduating with a degree in history. He continued his education at Marshall University where he obtained a master’s in public administration. He is currently the Deputy State Auditor for the County Collections Division of the West Virginia State Auditor’s Office. In this capacity he is responsible for the collection and enforcement of delinquent property taxes on real property in West Virginia. In addition, he is responsible for the distribution and collection of public utility taxes in West Virginia. He has been with the State Auditor’s Office since 1981.

The Blaxploition Film Mystique

Bluefield State College has released a list of activities planned for its 2015 Black History Month celebration.
On Wednesday, February 4th, 2015, Bluefield State College professor of English, Dr. Sean Connolly will host a discussion on “The Blaxploition Film Mystique.” This event will be held in Basic Science, room 111 at 11 AM. This event is free and open to the public.
On Wednesday, February 11, 2015 at 11 AM, Bluefield State College will host the stage production of “The Meeting” in the Basic Science Auditorium on the campus of Bluefield State College. The presentation depicts a fictional conversation held between Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Minister Malcolm X. This event is sponsored by the Bluefield State College Student Government Association and the Title III office of Bluefield State College. This event is free and open to the public. Schools are invited to attend.
On Wednesday, February 25, 2015, BSC hosts special guest lecturer, Dr. Karsonya Wise-Whitehead, association professor of Communications at Loyola University Maryland. She will present and discuss on her book, Notes From A Colored Girl: The Civil War Pocket Diaries of Emilie Francis Davis, an examination of African American life during the end of the Civil War through the diary of northern African American free woman. This event takes place at 11 AM in the Hebert Gallery, Harris-Jefferson Student Center on the campus of Bluefield State College. This event is sponsored by the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission, the West Virginia Council for Community and Technical Education, and the office of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion. Free and open to the public.
Three films will also be shown during the course of the month. Dr. Rodney Montague, associate professor of History will host discussions on the Exploration of Blaxploitation Films. February 5th – “Superfly”; February 12th – “Coffy”; February 19th – “Shaft.” All films will be shown in the Game Room, Harris-Jefferson Student Center, on the campus of Bluefield State College, at 4:30 PM. Free and open to the public.

Jupiter at Opposition

The giant planet will be at its closest approach to Earth and its face will be fully illuminated by the Sun. This is the best time to view and photograph Jupiter and its moons. A medium-sized telescope should be able to show you some of the details in Jupiter’s cloud bands. A good pair of binoculars should allow you to see Jupiter’s four largest moons, appearing as bright dots on either side of the planet.

Davis & Elkins Artist-in-Residence Monthly Concert

West Virginia History Day, informational displays at the State Capitol, Charleston, 9 AM – 2 PM February 19
History Day is a celebration of the Mountain State that brings together participants from all over the state. Representatives of historical, genealogical and preservation societies, as well as educational groups, museums and historical sites, bring displays and literature to share with legislators, the public and each other. Many display historical photographs and artifacts, and others dress in period costume. Historical re-enactors strolling through the Capitol halls in character are a highlight.

Archives and History Thursday Lecture: Opera in West Virginia

On February 26, 2015, Randall Reid-Smith will present “Opera in West Virginia” at the Thursday evening lecture in the Archives and History Library of the Culture Center in Charleston. The program will begin at 6:00 p.m. and is free and open to the public.
West Virginia has produced several important opera singers, including Eleanor Steber of Wheeling and Phyllis Curtin of Clarksburg. In 1940 at the age of 26, Steber made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera as Sophie in Richard Strauss’s Der Rosenkavalier. Six years later, the 25-year-old Curtin made her professional debut with the New England Opera Theater. Both went on to have long, successful careers in opera. As a young singer, Randall Reid-Smith was inspired by the fact that someone from Clarksburg could be an opera star, and he will discuss Curtin and Steber in his talk, sharing clips of Curtin in performance from YouTube. He also will talk about Frances Yeend, a world renowned soprano who later taught at West Virginia University, and mezzo-soprano Jane Hobson Shepherd who taught privately and at Marshall University and whose vocal students included Reid-Smith.
Randall Reid-Smith has served as the commissioner of the West Virginia Division of Culture and History since 2006. While he has been commissioner, the division has introduced several programs designed to support youth involvement in arts and history including the West Virginia State History Bowl, the Festival of Songs for middle and high school show choirs, the West Virginia Marching Band Invitational and the first statewide initiative of the VH1 Save The Music Foundation’s program bringing free musical instruments to qualified pre-K through middle schools in West Virginia. In 2013, Reid-Smith received the prestigious Support Music award from the National Association of Music Merchants and the National Association for Music Education for his support of and leadership during the statewide rebuild of West Virginia music education programs.
Reid-Smith is an accomplished opera singer who has won numerous competitions at the state and regional level and has maintained an international career as an operatic tenor since the mid-1980s. He received a bachelor’s degree in music from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and a master’s in music from Indiana University. Reid-Smith was awarded an honorary doctorate of music from Glenville State University.

Alpine Art & Music Festival

The 4th annual event will showcase the artists and musicians of Jackson and surrounding counties from 1-7 p.m. at two venues in downtown Ripley. Five musical acts will be featured in the historic Alpine Theatre, 210 W. Main Street.
