• Startup Weekend Huntington

  November 03, 2017 to November 05, 2017 — Huntington, Cabell

  Marshall University and the Robert C. Byrd Institute (RCBI) will host Startup Weekend Huntington, a 54-hour event allowing future entrepreneurs to gain experience toward creating their own startup businesses.

  This weekend-long event will kick off 6:30 p.m., Friday, Nov. 3, and run through 4 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 5, at RCBI’s main office, located at 1050 4th Ave. in Huntington.

  Attendees of the event will form teams consisting of those who specialize in varying fields, from entrepreneurship to business to coding and more. Each team will be asked to create a company while receiving tips from the community’s best mentors, investors and businessmen and women. Presentations of the final products will be presented to a panel of experienced judges, and the top three groups will receive prizes.

• Creators Talk: "Making a Living in Music in WV - A Unique Odyssey" w/ Michael Lipton

  From garbage mogul, acclaimed journalist, newspaper publisher, film composer… while always making his bed as a working musician… A whacky trip down memory lane down Michael Lipton”

  After growing up in Miami, FL, Michael Lipton moved to rural Calhoun County, WV, in 1973. While there he played in the group Big Money and started King Pin Trash Service, the only trash collection service in the county. In the mid-eighties, after his house was struck by lightning and burned to the ground, he moved to Charleston where he began writing for The Charleston Gazette and freelancing for a number of national music magazines including Creem, LA Weekly, Launch, Spin and Yahoo Music. Lipton served as the editor and co-publisher of the statewide entertainment paper Graffiti for 15 years until it was sold to Ogden Publications in 2004. He won an Edward R. Murrow Award and Columbia School of Journalism Award for his music on Trey Kay’ radio documentary, “The Great Textbook War.” Lipton has also scored three feature films produced and directed by Danny Boyd, documentaries, and short films. In the late 1980s, he was hired as the electric guitarist in the house band for the NPR show “Mountain Stage.” He founded the West Virginia Music Hall of Fame in 2005 and continues to serve as Executive Director. In addition to producing all of the WVMHoF’s projects, events and induction ceremonies, he produced the feature documentary, “WV My Home: Musicians and the Mountain State Experience” which was funded in part by the WV Humanities Council and the WV Legislature.

• Harpers Ferry Civil War Round Table

  Join the Harpers Ferry Civil War Round Table this year for its series of stimulating lectures and dinners. Dinners will be at 6:30 pm, with programs following at 7:30 pm on the second Wednesday of each month, at Camp Hill-Wesley United Methodist Church, 645 W. Washington St., Harpers Ferry.   November 08, 2017 — Shepherdstown, Jefferson

  On November 8 at 7 p.m., Doug Perks, Jefferson County Museum Historian and WV History Hero, will present “Changing Faces—Mr. Jefferson’s County” as the finale of the Historic Shepherdstown Commission’s 2017 Speakers Series. The talk will take place in the auditorium of the Robert C. Byrd Center for Congressional History and Education on the Shepherd University campus. The event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will follow the talk.

  Perks will feature historic and recent photos from his collection and the archives of both the Historic Shepherdstown Commission and the Jefferson County Museum. The focus will be on on Shepherdstown and the surrounding area. The purpose of the presentation is to illustrate how the viewscapes in and around Jefferson County have changed over time.

  For relative newcomers, this talk will provide a chance to see into the past of their historic adopted county. For long-time residents, it may spark some memories or recall some storied events.

  Historic Shepherdstown’s 2018 Speakers Series schedule will be announced early next year.

• Vietnam: West Virginians Remember public screening

  November 10, 2017 — Wheeling, Ohio WVHC Event

  Vietnam: West Virginians Remember is a documentary from West Virginia Public Broadcasting featuring the experiences of five West Virginia combat soldiers. Per capita, West Virginians served the most and died the most in Vietnam. It lives on as America’s most controversial war – with questions unanswered, lessons not learned, and for veterans who survive, including thousands of West Virginians, haunting memories remain. Premieres Thursday, September 14 at 8pm on WVPB, encore broadcasts Sept 17 & 24 at 7 p.m.

  This critically acclaimed female a cappella quintet from Zimbabwe has drawn international acclaim for its inventive performances that range from traditional Zimbabwean songs to Afro Jazz to Gospel. The ensemble’s concerts are performed with pure voices, augmented by minimalistic percussion, traditional instruments such as the Mbira (thumb piano), and organic, authentic dance movements.

  Activities include a 10 a.m. parade from Ripley High School to the Jackson County Courthouse. The 11 a.m. ceremony on the courthouse lawn includes a selection by Landau Eugene Murphy, Jr.
• Vietnam: West Virginians Remember public screening

  November 12, 2017 — Ripley, Jackson

  The documentary, produced by West Virginia Public Television with assistance from the West Virginia Humanities Council, is on the big screen of the historic Alpine Theatre, 210 W. Main Street in Ripley. More than 36,000 Mountain State residents performed combat duty in Vietnam. The film features five of them. Admission is free. Donations will be accepted for the Jackson County Hunting Heroes. 2:00 PM Sunday, November 12.
