SharePrint Archives and History Tuesday Lecture: History of a Loudon Heights Garden Club and Neighborhood-Revisited

On Tuesday, February 2, 2016, members of Charleston, West Virginia’s Loudon Heights Garden Club will discuss “History of a Loudon Heights Garden Club and Neighborhood-Revisited” in the Archives and History Library of the Culture Center in Charleston. The program will begin at 6:00 p.m. and is free and open to the public.

Members will discuss the history of the club, beginning in the year 1929, as well as the neighborhoods it encompasses within the Loudon Heights area. The homes of the 12 charter members which include the Laidley, Venable, Kay and Jackson families will be highlighted, along with how those members influenced not only local and state, but also national gardening practices.

The Loudon Heights Company was chartered on July 18, 1922 by G.H. Caperton, C.P, Myers, William Ohley, Edward Gephart and C. McCoy. The Loudon Heights Garden Club originated in 1929 and became federated in 1932. It remains a vital component of the neighborhood today.

On February 2, the library will close at 5:00 p.m. and reopen at 5:45 p.m. for participants only. For additional information, contact the Archives and History Library at (304) 558-0230.
