Howard "Tick" Lilly is born at Crow, Raleigh County.

Sep, 1942

Howard "Tick" Lilly is honorably discharged from the U.S. Naval Air Corps to become a test pilot.

Sep 01, 1946

As a test pilot at the Lewis Flight Propulsion Laboratory (now Glenn Research Center), Howard "Tick" Lilly participates in the Cleveland National Air Races.

Mar 21, 1948

As a member of the Muroc Flight Test Unit in California, Howard "Tick" Lilly becomes the fourth test pilot to break the sound barrier.

May 03, 1948

Howard "Tick" Lilly is killed when his D-558-01 Skystreak crashes on takeoff at Muroc, becoming the first test NACA/NASA test pilot killed in the line of duty.
