State Colors

The state colors of West Virginia are blue and ‘‘old gold.’’ The state was without official colors until its centennial year, when these colors were adopted March 8, 1963, by a concurrent resolution of the Senate and House of Delegates.

Previously, in most instances where a color scheme for the state was desired, West Virginia University’s colors of blue and old gold had been used. The use of the university’s colors had become almost uniform throughout the state, and many people considered them the official state colors even before the 1963 legislative action. The colors, according to the widely used Pantone color matching system, are PMS 286 (blue) and PMS 124.
