Caption: West Virginia State President John Warren Davis talks to students working on an airplane in this 1939 photo. West Virginia State was the first African-American school to have a Civilian Pilot Training Program. The program operated at what was once Wertz Field adjacent to campus. Several of the students went on to become Tuskegee Airmen and to serve in the famous Army Air Corps 99th Pursuit Squadron.
