Ogden Newspapers is a media corporation that publishes more than 50 daily newspapers, several magazines, weekly newspapers, and shoppers in 18 states, including Florida, Hawaii, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. The company’s headquarters is in Wheeling.
Herschel C. Ogden founded the Wheeling Daily News in 1890, which later merged with the Wheeling Register to become today’s Wheeling News-Register. Ogden purchased the Wheeling Intelligencer in 1904 and began to build what has become the largest newspaper chain in West Virginia.
Ogden-owned newspapers in West Virginia, in addition to the Intelligencer and Wheeling News-Register, include the Parkersburg News and Sentinel, the Martinsburg Journal, the Elkins Inter-Mountain, the Wetzel Chronicle, the Weirton Daily Times, the Tyler Star News in Sistersville, the Shepherdstown Chronicle, Graffiti in Parkersburg, and The Green Tab and WV Web in Moundsville. The company publishes several magazines, including Mother Earth News and Grit.
H. C. Ogden’s grandson, G. Ogden Nutting, is the present publisher of Ogden Newspapers. He started his newspaper career in 1956 as a reporter and news editor for the Martinsburg Journal, which H. C. Ogden had bought in 1923. Robert Nutting is company president and chief executive officer.
