On November 6, 1863, Droop Mountain<\/a> was the site of one of the most important Civil War battles fought on West Virginia soil. Confederate troops led by Brig. Gen. John Echols were defeated by a larger federal force led by Brig. Gen. William W. Averell. West Virginia dedicated Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park, now 287 acres, on July 4, 1928.
