I was the first director for the festival, and worked with Merle and other community leaders to produce the festival. I have a cherished photo of me with a monkey perched on my shoulder that belonged to an Italian organ grinder I discovered in Pitsburgh. He came with a troupe of street buskers that walked the crowded streets swallowing swords, juggling and eating fire, all in medieval costumes. After all it was the recreation of a period Italian marketplace. We also did the design of the booths and produced the sound and lighting for the festival. A great time was had by all!
