The “magistrate” of the pig trial was William Anderson Hatfield, first cousin to Devil Anse. “Preacher” Anse was the local justice of the peace, as well as being a Baptist preacher. His daughter, Pricey, married Ben Alley, and they are the parents of Viola May, my grandmother.

Well written summary! I just watched the last of the History Channel’s six-hour movie. This article was helpful as a review of names, relationships, and a timeline of events. It’s too bad the movie wasn’t filmed in West Virginia!
