Events for October 2020

  • "Frances Benjamin Johnston: West Virginia Icon" Exhibit

    October 01, 2020 to October 31, 2020 — Morgantown, Monongalia

The “Frances Benjamin Johnston: West Virginia Icon” exhibit is about Grafton native Frances Benjamin Johnston, who was a self-made photographer in the late Victorian and early 20th century. While Johnston photographed celebrities such as Mark Twain and the Roosevelts, her most enduring legacy is her historic preservation work doing photographic surveys of the American South, funded by the Carnegie Corporation and administered by the Library of Congress.

Our exhibit consists of 26 enlarged photographs rarely seen outside the Library of Congress with explanatory captions. The exhibit can be displayed on the wall, easels or tabletops, along with some books of her photography including a first edition. The exhibit is free and open to the public; a web-based version is going live soon for those who cannot attend in person.

Come see the exhibit at the Aull Center throughout October 2020!

Aull Center 351 Spruce St. Morgantown, WV 26505

    October 14, 2020 — Online,

Join author Eric Douglas to learn about the pitfalls and pluses of being an indie writer. October 14th at 7pm

    About this Event

The publishing world has changed dramatically over the last few years. Independent publishing is now a business decision instead of a last-ditch option. Eric Douglas is a hybrid author, with books published by traditional publishers and an independent author. His talk will cover the pitfalls and pluses of being an indie and he will also talk about what to do when your book is “out there”. He will discuss marketing your books, staying “exclusive” or “going wide” and lessons he’s learned.

Please note the link for this online workshop will be sent to the email you provide at registration.

  • Creators Program- Return of Mothman webinar

    October 28, 2020 — Online,

Herbert Gardner and Calvin Grimm are the co-founders and co-directors of Vandalia FilmWorx Foundation, dedicated to telling West Virginia stories, filmed here in the state. They have just begun primary filming of their next feature length film based on the novel, “Return of the Mothman,” by Bram Stoker Award-winning author Michael Knost. The story is a suspense/horror drama. This marks a departure from earlier period piece (“River of Hope,” released 2/15/2020) and the crime documentary “Mountain of the Missing” now in post-production. They will address, anecdotally, the challenges of independent filmmaking in WV and the creative process.

    October 28, 2020 07:00 PM via Zoom.
