Discovery of the X-Ray

Dr. Christopher Alewine will lecture on Wilhelm Roentgen (1845-1923) who discovered the X-Ray and received the first Nobel Prize ever awarded. The presentation is part of the Pylon Medical History Lecture Series. Sculpted by the late Milton Horn, the pylons of WVU Health Sciences Center are an iconic representation of art, history, and education in the form of seven foot marble pillars. The originals are housed at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown and a replica set are displayed at WVU Charleston Division. A third set will be unveiled in Martinsburg on August 16. The lecture series will discuss each scene of the pylon and its relationship to the history of medicine.

Letters From Liberia

Using the African Colonization movement and 25 letters written (1831-1860) from its colony – Liberia – by Jefferson County African Americans, the program will offer a window into antebellum black life in Jefferson County and the varied and complex daily lives and views of black and white Jefferson Countians as the nation became more polarized over the issue of slavery.

Creators Workshop: 3D Animation Workshop

Want to create your own worlds? Better yet, blow ’em up – and let the computer calculate the physics for explosions, smoke, and fire. This Creators fan favorite, hands-on workshop will introduce beginners to Blender, a powerful, open-source 3D software that is available as a FREE download. A series of exercises will send you flying through 3D space. Learn the basics of sculpting your own sets and characters and how to animate and render your own 3D CGI videos. Anything is possible with animation!
Gilliland has extensive experience in both live-action and animated filmmaking. He has worked as a cinematographer, videographer, and editor on scores of projects including documentaries, commercials, and music videos. He has production designer credits on three feature films. He has conducted dozens of workshops for all ages – from elementary school students to Elderhostel scholars. He has given presentations for organizations such as the West Virginia Governor’s Honors Academy, the West Virginia Filmmakers’ Guild, and the University of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania, Africa. He has enjoyed learning from his own students as a faculty member in West Virginia State University’s Department of Communications for the past 30 years.

Yeager Airport and West Virginia Air Guard 70th Anniversary Airshow

— Charleston, Kanawha
Charleston’s Yeager Airport and the West Virginia Air National Guard’s 130th Airlift Wing will celebrate their 70th anniversary with an air show Sept. 30-Oct. 1, featuring flying demonstrations, aircraft displays and tours, and rides aboard World War II-era aircraft.
The air show will include several examples of aircraft associated with the airport during its early years, including a Curtiss C-46 Commando transport plane — the first aircraft assigned to the West Virginia Air Guard’s 130th Airlift Wing — and an American Airlines DC-3, the first commercial aircraft to operate at Kanawha Airport during its 1947 debut.
A World War II-era P-51 fighter will be part of a “Rise Above” traveling exhibit detailing the history of the Tuskegee Airmen, who formed the first two squadrons of black fighter pilots given the opportunity to serve in the U.S. military and did so with distinction during World War II.
Other aircraft committed to taking part in the air show, so far, include World War II-era B-17 Flying Fortress and B-25 Mitchell bombers and a C-47 Skytrain transport from the Yankee Air Museum. Also scheduled are a World War I-era Curtiss JN-4 Jenny biplane, a Stinson L-5 “Flying Jeep” single-engine observation plane, a T-6 Texan training aircraft for fighter pilots and a World War II-era Grumman TMB Avenger torpedo bomber.
Rides will be available aboard the B-17 and B-25 bombers for a fee. Rides can be booked at http://yankeeairmuseum.org/fly/
Entry to the air show will be free, with parking available on the airfield from an entry gate at the general aviation area. Overflow parking will be available in Yeager Airport’s long-term parking garages. Buses will shuttle air show attendees from the parking areas to the entry gate.

Tamarack’s David L. Dickirson Fine Arts Gallery is mounting its first ever solo exhibition, titled The History of Rust in America and features the art work of Robert Villamagna.

Artist Biography
Artist Robert Villamagna works in repurposed lithographed metal, assemblage, and mixed-media. Villamagna’s work has been exhibited at the Carnegie Museum of Art, the Andy Warhol Museum, the Mattress Factory, Senator John Heinz History Center, ARC Gallery (Chicago), Penn State’s Robeson Gallery, Pittsburgh Center of the Arts, Society of Arts & Crafts (Boston), Erie Museum of Art, the Ohio Craft Museum, Huntington Museum of Art, The Clay Center, and the West Virginia Culture Center. Five of Villamagna’s works are in the State of West Virginia Permanent Collection. In 2016, Villamagna was named West Virginia Artist of the Year. Villamagna is an Assistant Professor of Art at West Liberty University, and director of the University’s Nutting Gallery.
