• Ballad singer Phyllis Marks

  September 08, 2016 — Charleston, Kanawha WVHC Event

  On the evening of Thursday, September 8, The West Virginia Folklife Program, a project of the West Virginia Humanities Council, will present a concert by West Virginia ballad singer Phyllis Marks. The concert will be held from 5:30-7:30pm at the historic MacFarland-Hubbard House, headquarters of the West Virginia Humanities Council (1310 Kanawha Blvd. E) in Charleston. The free event will include a performance, question-answer session, and reception, and will be recorded and archived at the Library of Congress.

  Phyllis Marks, age 89, is according to folklorist Gerry Milnes the last active ballad singer in the state who “learned by heart” via oral transmission. Marks was recorded for the Library of Congress in 1978 and has performed for 62 years at the West Virginia State Folk Festival in her hometown of Glenville. Phyllis Marks is among West Virginia’s finest traditional musicians and a master of unaccompanied Appalachian ballad singing. Following her performance, Marks will give a brief interview with West Virginia University musicology professor and West Virginia native Travis Stimeling.

  “West Virginia Folklife Presents Ballad Singer Phyllis Marks” is supported by ZMM Architects & Engineers in Charleston and The American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress’ 2016 Henry Reed Fund Award. Established in 2004 with an initial gift from founding AFC director Alan Jabbour, the fund provides small awards to support activities directly involving folk artists, especially when the activities reflect, draw upon, or strengthen the archival collections of the AFC.

  The West Virginia Folklife Program is a project of the West Virginia Humanities Council and is supported in part by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Folk & Traditional Arts Program.   Chilifest: Set for Saturday, Sept. 10, in downtown Huntington along 3rd Avenue and Pullman Square, the annual West Virginia State Chili Championship is sanctioned by the International Chili Society and sponsored by Chili Willi’s and WSAZ. • Archives and History Thursday Lecture: "Reconstruction in West Virginia"

  September 15, 2016 — Charleston, Kanawha

  On Thursday, September 15, 2016, Greg Carroll will present “Reconstruction in West Virginia, 1865-1875: A Failure that Led to Future Mistakes,” in the Archives and History Library of the Culture Center in Charleston. The program will begin at 6:00 p.m. and is free and open to the public.

  The State of West Virginia was formed in 1863 by a Republican elite that was quickly overwhelmed by a Democratic backlash after the Civil War and voted out of power by 1870. The reactionary return to courthouse clique control of the state led to the eventual takeover of natural resources by out-of-state interests. According to Carroll, the Reconstruction period laid the foundation for a colonial economy and an abusive labor system, which created the boom-and-bust cycle that continues to shape West Virginia’s present-day economy.

  Greg Carroll was a historian at West Virginia Archives and History for 23 years. A native of Texas, he is a long-time resident of Putnam County. Carroll is a graduate of the University of Texas and Marshall University, has studied Native American and Civil War history in West Virginia, and has spoken statewide on these topics. He also serves on the boards of the West Virginia International Film Festival and West Virginia Citizen Action Group.

  Participants may park behind the Culture Center after 5:00 p.m. on September 15 and enter the building at the back loading dock area. There also is limited handicapped parking available in the new bus turnaround.

• Hatfields & McCoys: American Blood Feud traveling exhibit

  Developed by the West Virginia Humanities Council and illustrated by West Virginia University graphic design students with financial support from ZMM Architects and Engineers, this traveling exhibit relates the history of the events that have become synonymous with the word feud. • Canadian Thanksgiving Bicycle Ride

  September 17, 2016 — Marlinton, Pocahontas

  The Canadian Thanksgiving Bicycle Ride is suitable for all ages and abilities. The Greenbrier River Trail is a well maintained trail with a packed gravel surface open to bicycle, foot, and equestrian travel. Ride support includes shuttle service, rest stops, lunch, and ham radio support provided by the Eight Rivers Amateur Radio Club. Commemorative event T-Shirt to each registered rider. Challenged Athletes of West Virginia is a 501-C-3 nonprofit organization dedicated to providing outdoor sports and recreation opportunities for Children and adults with disabilities. • Creators Talk with WV State Poet Laureate Marc Harshman

  Traditional Tuvan music was created to unite the human spirit with the spirits of nature. Exercising complex control of the vocal tract, Tuvan throat singers imitate multiple nature sounds simultaneously, from low guttural growling to high-pitched chirps, making unique, often haunting, harmonic music.
