• 27th Multifest

  August 05, 2016 to August 07, 2016 — Charleston, Kanawha

  MULTIFEST is a highly anticipated event in West Virginia that brings together various cultural and ethnic communities in an atmosphere of tolerance and good will through art, music, education, cultural programs and cuisine. Over 30,000 plus people are expected to attend. This is the only statewide event in West Virginia that promotes cultural diversity. • Hatfields & McCoys: American Blood Feud traveling exhibit

  August 11, 2016 to September 05, 2016 — Petersburg, Hardy WVHC Event

  Developed by the West Virginia Humanities Council and illustrated by West Virginia University graphic design students with financial support from ZMM Architects and Engineers, this traveling exhibit relates the history of the events that have become synonymous with the word feud. August 11 – September 5 at the Landes Art Center, Petersburg.
• 2016 State Fair of West Virginia

  August 12, 2016 to August 21, 2016 — Fairlea, Greenbrier

  In 1854, the Greenbrier Agricultural Society began organizing and having an annual fair where agricultural accomplishments could be displayed. Declared the State Fair by the legislature in 1941, it continues today with new excitement, new shows and the same feeling of being at an old time event. August 12-21 at the fairgrounds in Fairlea. • Mill Creek Adventure Day

  August 13, 2016 — Ripley, Jackson

  This second annual event features snake and fish exhibits by the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources and birds of prey from Three Rivers Avian Center. • Adairs Run Concert at Chuck Mathena Center

  August 13, 2016 — Princeton, Mercer

  Adairs Run is a country group with a fiery edge based in Nashville, TN. Their sound encompasses the roots from rock and roll all the way to melodies that tie into the heartfelt storytelling in today’s country music. The band is made up of Princeton native, Todd Hanchock, Pat Pollifrone, Ian Daugherty and Chad Yarger. In May 2016, the band released their first EP titled “Turn Back The Miles.” The new music features 6 new compositions including one song featuring hit rock artist, Chris Daughtry. The single was released to radio in June. All proceeds from the performance will benefit Bluefield and Princeton Salvation Army. • Archives and History Block Speaker Series: Rosa Lena Pickel

  August 18, 2016 — Charleston, Kanawha

  On Thursday, August 18, 2016, Rosa Lena Pickel will present “African American Life: A Personal Perspective” in the Archives and History Library in the Culture Center in Charleston. The program, which is the fourth of the 2016 Block Speakers Series, will begin at 6:00 p.m. and is free and open to the public.

  Rosa Lena Pickel was born in Charleston, the fourth child and third daughter to Samuel David Pickel Sr. and Lydia Byrd Plunkett. She attended Boyd Elementary, Boyd Jr. High, and Garnet High School and graduated as class valedictorian in January 1948. In 1952, she graduated magna cum laude from West Virginia State College, receiving a bachelor’s of science in education with majors in business administration and French.

  Rosa Pickel was the first West Virginia State College graduate to receive the Fulbright Award to study and travel abroad. She studied at the Sorbonne in Paris and at the Université de Franche-Comté in Besançon, France, from September 1952 to June 1953 and received the Certificate of French Studies. In 1965, Pickel received a master’s degree in French Literature from Atlanta University.

  Her teaching career began in 1955 at Morris Brown College in Atlanta, Georgia, and concluded at West Virginia State College in May 1996. During those years she taught French, Spanish, English, and Commerce in high schools and colleges from Maryland to South Carolina. She served as commencement marshal at West Virginia State College for many years and was grand marshal at her own retirement in May 1996.

  Pickel is a member of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, where she has held many leadership positions. She has traveled to Europe, Africa, the Holy Land, Greece, Canada, Mexico, Russia, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and Egypt and currently enjoys preventive care exercises, short trips, photography, and her sorority Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. She also participates in the Henry Highland Garnett Foundation, Inc., and the WVSC Foundation, Inc., and is a member of the President’s Circle at West Virginia State and an annual scholarship donor.

  Participants may park behind the Culture Center after 5:00 p.m. on August 18 and enter the building at the back loading dock area. There also is limited handicapped parking available in the new bus turnaround.

• Fifth annual Brew Skies Festival

  August 19, 2016 to August 20, 2016 — Davis, Tucker

  The fifth annual Brew Skies Festival, set for Aug. 19-20 at the family-owned Timberline Four Seasons Resort in Davis, West Virginia, features the state’s now 16 different breweries as well as a homebrew competition as part of the festivities. • Pour! Wine Fundraiser

  August 26, 2016 — Huntington, Cabell

  Pour! From 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 26, a wine fundraiser at Savannah’s Restaurant, 1208 6th Ave., Huntington. Enjoy the taste and aroma of fine wines while pouring money into kids’ lives through this Children’s Place fundraiser.   Chuck Mathena Center presents Greenbrier Valley Theatre’s “Pump Boys & Dinettes” on Saturday, August 27 at 7pm.

  Pull off the road on Highway 57, order up some spoonbread, some butter beans and corn and top if off with a piece of homemade pie at the Double Cupp Diner. You’ll find some amiable company with the dinettes and the gas station attendants from across the road as they fill their days with music and humor. This jubilant country western musical is just good ole down home fun!

• Elvis Barn Dance

  August 27, 2016 — Cottageville, Jackson

  An Elvis impersonator and The Time Machine Band will entertain at this benefit for WV flood victims from 7-11 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 27 at the Jackson County Fairgrounds. Admission is $10 with proceeds going to Mountain Mission’s Hope Fund.
