    The Mountain State Art and Craft Fair®: An Appalachian Experience continues a long tradition of bringing high-quality craftsmanship to the beautiful state of West Virginia. It is known for hosting unique shopping, family fun and entertainment.

    Since 1963 the fair has taken place on the grounds of the picturesque Cedar Lakes Conference Center near Ripley, WV. Operated by the WV Department of Agriculture, this serene setting makes the ideal landscape to feature some of the best that the Appalachian region has to offer.

  • Downtown Charleston ArtWalk

    July 18, 2019 — Charleston, Kanawha

    With exciting and unique offerings around every corner, Downtown Charleston ArtWalk celebrates the arts on the third Thursday each month March through December, except in November and June when the event falls on Black Friday and the week of FestivALL, respectively. Specific 2019 dates are below.

    ​There is a plethora of art related events and openings, activities, and special programming that take place all over downtown.

  • African American Life: A Personal Perspective - Block Speaker Series

    July 20, 2019 — Charleston, Kanawha

    On Saturday, July 20, 2019, Elliot G. Hicks will be the next speaker in the 2019 Block Speaker Series of “African American Life: A Personal Perspective” in the Archives and History Library in the Culture Center in Charleston. The program will begin at 3:00 p.m. and is free and open to the public.

    Elliot Hicks, a native of Charleston’s West Side, has practiced law in Charleston for thirty-eight years. Specializing in the areas of product and premises liability, corporate and commercial litigation, and insurance and medical malpractice defense, he has taken more than 100 cases to jury verdict in state and federal district courts. Hicks was elected a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers in 2007 and is a member of the Federation of Defense and Corporate Counsel. He served as president of the West Virginia State Bar, 1998-1999, and has been a regular panelist on The Law Works, a West Virginia Public Television show on legal issues of interest to the public.

    In 2014, Hicks opened Ellerbee Enterprises, Inc., an engineering and environmental consulting company providing services to the energy sector and other traditional businesses. He continues his work in the legal world, however, in the area of mediation and arbitration under the name of Hicks Resolutions.

    After attending Washington and Lee University, Hicks and graduated from West Virginia University with a bachelor’s degree in political science in 1978. He received his doctor of jurisprudence degree from West Virginia University College of Law and was admitted to practice law in West Virginia in 1981.

    Hicks served on the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission, 1999-2006, and currently serves as the chairman of Concord University’s Board of Governors. He also has served on the board of trustees at the First Baptist Church and at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation, both in Charleston. In 2019, Hicks was awarded the Governor’s Living the Dream Award by the Martin Luther King Jr. State Holiday Commission.

  • Contact Light: 50 Years Since the Small Step

    July 20, 2019 — Charleston, Kanawha

    Saturday at 5 PM – 11:30 PM

    Camp Virgil Tate, 1400 Camp Virgil Tate Rd, Charleston, West Virginia 25312

    When on July 20th, 1969 a small probe on the leg of the Lunar Lander Eagle touched the Moon’s surface for the first time and made a small light illuminate on the crafts display panel, mankind was changed forever.

    The Kanawha Valley Astronomical Society and the Kanawha County Public Library invite you to a celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the landing of Apollo 11.

    KVAS will open the doors to the Breezy Point Observatory for Lunar and other celestial viewing.

    The Boone Maxwell Lodge will be open so the public can meet members of KVAS and view different types of telescopes.

    A display of space memorabilia covering the space age will be on display.

    WVSOAR will have a display or rockets as well as a rocket building clinic where you can build and launch a rocket for a small fee.

    Starting around 10:45PM a replay of the original television broadcast of the historic Moonwalk will be shown 50 years to the minute.

    The KCPL will be also hold it’s celebration of the finale of it’s summer reading program. Events will be held in the Brooks Daughtery Dining hall. Pre-registration may be required.

  • Wheeling Hospital and Wheeling Ambulance

    July 22, 2019 — Wheeling, Ohio

    The Ohio Valley Civil War Roundtable is presenting a special lecture series this year to coincide with the Wheeling 250 observance.

    The roundtable’s series is exploring the theme of Wheeling During the Civil War. The programs are free and open to the public.

    Nine talks will be offered at 6:30 p.m. on specified Mondays in the auditorium of the Ohio County Public Library, 52 16th St.

    The roundtable’s regular meetings will be conducted after the lectures. The group will not meet in September or December.

    In addition to the lecture series, the Ohio Valley Civil War Roundtable is organizing a special event on Memorial Day.

    The dates and topics for the lectures are as follows:

    • July 22 — “Wheeling Hospital and Wheeling Ambulance,” presented by Margaret Brennan.
    • Aug. 26 — “Carlin’s Battery and Capt. John Carlin,” presented by Ed Phillips.
    • Oct. 28 — “Wheeling’s Confederate Unit, the Shriver Grays,” presented by Gerry Reilly.
    • Nov. 25 — “Pro and Con Wheeling Newspapers During the War,” presented by Laker.

    The Ohio Valley Civil War Roundtable will hold a Memorial Day walk through Greenwood Cemetery, beginning at 9 a.m. May 27. Participants will mark the graves of veterans from both sides of the conflict.
