  July 03, 2018 — Ripley, Jackson

  The Father of our Country is portrayed by Dale Fellows. The free performance is 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 3 in the historic Alpine Theatre.
• 2018 Mountain State Art & Craft Fair

  July 04, 2018 to July 07, 2018 — Cedar Lakes Conference Center, Jackson

  A tradition since 1963, this event is known as “The Granddaddy of Art & Craft Fairs.” The 4-day event features more than 100 artisans, food, music and culture. The Fair is divided into five villages that made Appalachia unique: Celtic, Italian, German, Swiss, and The Americas. Hours are from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. daily, July 4-7, 2018. http://msacf.com/
• Ripley 4th of July

  July 04, 2018 — Ripley, Jackson

  It is known as “America’s Largest Small-Town Independence Day Celebration.” The festivities begin with the 9 a.m. Little Patriot’s Hour with superheroes. Events to follow are the 11:30 Firecracker 2-Mile Race, the noon Grand Parade, free entertainment all day, and 10 p.m.fireworks.
• The Iraq War: 1998-2018 Quagmire in Babylon

  July 12, 2018 — Charleston, Kanawha

  On Thursday, July 12, 2018, author Joseph Wyatt will present “The Iraq War: 1998-2018 Quagmire in Babylon” in the Archives and History Library at the Culture Center, State Capitol Complex in Charleston. The program will begin at 6:00 p.m. and is free and open to the public.

  Many West Virginians served in the Iraq War, which began more than 15 years ago in March 2003. Questions remain as to why the war was fought, what was gained, and what was lost. Through a slide show and overview of the war, Wyatt will answer some of those questions. He will describe events leading to the invasion, the push to Baghdad, and many of the outcomes for both Iraq and the U.S., including Iraq’s descent into civil war despite the efforts of those who served. Wyatt’s son Daniel, who wrote the foreword to his father’s most recent book and is a Marine Corps veteran who completed two tours of duty in Iraq, will offer his insights on the war, as well.

  Joseph Wyatt is emeritus professor at Marshall University and is a contributing columnist for the Charleston Gazette-Mail. He has authored several books, including The Breaking Point Killing and Other True Cases of Murder and Malice: A West Virginia Forensic Psychologist Remembers (2015). His new book, Quagmire in Babylon, 1998-2018: A History of the Iraq War, will be available for sale on July 12, and he will autograph copies at the end of the program.

  Participants may park behind the Culture Center after 5:00 p.m. on July 12 and enter the building at the back loading dock area. There also is limited handicapped parking available in the new bus turnaround.

• Wyoming County Civil War Days

  July 13, 2018 to July 15, 2018 — Twin Falls State Park, Wyoming

  This family friendly event is held annually in Wyoming County to promote the education of the events, personal stories, weaponry, clothing, food, dance, etc. during the Civil War. This is an excellent opportunity to explore and learn about the ways our ancestors lived in the mid 1800’s and the impact the Civil War had on their lives and on Wyoming County.

• Beverly Days

  July 14, 2018 to July 15, 2018 — Beverly, Randolph

  Beverly, West Virginia was the original county seat of Randolph County, and was a crucial crossroads through settlement, Civil War and 20th Century history. Located 6 miles south of Elkins along US Rt 219, Beverly is an active heritage tourism destination with town historic district, Rich Mountain Battlefield, and multiple museums and shops anchored by the Beverly Heritage Center.

  Beverly Heritage Days is our primary heritage event of the year. Living history camps will include Native American, Pioneer, Civil War, and World War II eras. For this year we are seeking additional representation from post‐ Civil War periods, including World War I and civilian life. Living history, first person impressions, demonstrations, heritage crafts and displays are all welcome. The event will welcome music from a variety of periods, and a “timeline” dance Saturday evening will feature music and dancing from 18th, 19th and 20th centuries.

• Vanishing Act: Rediscovering the South Charleston Naval Ordnance Plant

  July 19, 2018 — Charleston, Kanawha

  On Thursday, July 19, 2018, Kyle Warmack will present “Vanishing Act: Rediscovering the South Charleston Naval Ordnance Plant” in the Archives and History Library at the Culture Center, State Capitol Complex in Charleston. The program will begin at 6:00 p.m. and is free and open to the public.

  Despite the direct involvement of Presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt and John F. Kennedy, an all-star cast of 20th-century West Virginia politicians ranging from former Governor William MacCorkle to U.S. Senator Joe Manchin, personal involvement from U.S. Senators Robert C. Byrd and Jennings Randolph, and a central role in American military developments of the last one hundred years, the South Charleston Naval Ordnance Plant has received recognition in only a few short articles and brief recollections since its conversion to an industrial park in the 1970s. Speaker Kyle Warmack will discuss not only the factory’s origins and development, but also the process of recovering its history piece by piece—from Navy records in the National Archives to Massachusetts Institute of Technology yearbooks. He also will share a sneak preview of the South Charleston Interpretive Center’s special Ordnance Plant exhibit that will be open this fall.

  After graduating from the UCLA School of Film and Television, Kyle Warmack spent a decade working as a chief lighting technician and cinematographer in Los Angeles before moving to West Virginia in pursuit of opportunities in historic preservation. He is a fulltime AmeriCorps member with the Clio Foundation (based at Marshall University) and designer of the South Charleston Interpretive Center’s “Century Strong” exhibit, which will be open next to the Naval Ordnance Plant from September 3 to October 27, 2018.

• African American Life: A Personal Perspective

  July 26, 2018 — Charleston, Kanawha

  On Thursday, July 26, 2018, Sim E. Fryson will be the speaker in the third program of the 2018 Block Speaker Series of “African American Life: A Personal Perspective” in the Archives and History Library in the Culture Center in Charleston. The program will begin at 6:00 p.m. and is free and open to the public.

  A native of Charleston, Sim Fryson is the sixth of eight children born to the late Sim Fryson and Dorothy Hawkins Fryson. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in education from West Virginia State College and an associate degree in business and marketing from the University of Detroit through the General Motors Institute. Fryson served four years in the United States Air Force and is a veteran of the Vietnam War.

  Fryson began his automobile career while attending college by selling used cars on a small independent used car lot. He then became a sales person at C & O Motors, the largest automobile dealership in West Virginia. He was the first black person in West Virginia to become a new car sales person, F & I manager, sales manager, and general sales manager. In 1995, he became president and CEO of Sim Fryson Motor Company in Ashland, Kentucky, and most recently he owned a dealership in South Charleston. Fryson has received numerous awards and honors, including WSAZ Hometown Hero, and his company was named by Black Enterprise magazine as one of the top 100 black businesses in the country from 1985 to 1989 and again from 1995 to 2005.

  He is married to Susan Fryson and they have three children, Brent, Sydnei, and Sierra. He is a Seventh-Day Adventist Christian and is elder at the Shiloh Seventh-Day Adventist Church in Huntington, West Virginia.
