Appalachian Music Festival

This year’s Appalachian Music Festival features unique events with some of the best musicians and performing artists in West Virginia. June 8-10 at Tamarack.
June 8 – Courtyard Cafe
Live performances, featuring singer/songwriters and yummy coffee themed treats!
Begins at 7:30 PM, Tickets are $10 plus tax and processing fee.
June 9 – A Day of Free Music Performances in our Courtyard

June 10 – The Appalachian Country Cloggers
See West Virginia dancers as they demonstrate the art of Appalachian Clogging. You can even join in on the fun. Performances are at 11 am, 11:35 am, 12:10 pm and wraps up at 1 pm with a final performance in the courtyard.

Yak Fest
June 15, 2018 to June 16, 2018
— Saint Albans, Kanawha
The City of Saint Albans has joined with the Coal River Group to host a new event taking place June 15-16, the same weekend as the annual Tour de Coal, a Coal River Kayak Float event.
The new Yak Fest will be hosted by the City of Saint Albans in the Olde Main Plaza business district.
Yak Fest will feature live music, art, food, and craft beer along with many vendors highlighting kayaking, fishing, and other recreational activities.

2018 Tour de Coal

The 14th annual Tour De Coal June 16, 2018 will be bigger than ever! Start planning now! The City of St. Albans has joined up with the Tour De Coal to bring our 1,000 Kayakers a full weekend . All funds raised at the Tour De Coal go to the Coal River Group’s river restoration programs.
After floating the river there will be a new river event YAKFESTWV.com in downtown St. Albans! Get ready for great food, music for two nights, fantastic events. Arti Gras on Friday will offer great art and vendors. Saturday exhibitors will be on Main Street representing major Kayak brands, fishing tackle, river toys, fish aquarium displays, it’s all about fun on the River! A West Virginia Author Book Talk with John Mihalyo

Author John Mihalyo will speak about his novel, Always Living The Dream. Jake Million is living the life he has always desired. He is retired and is physically and financially able to “Always Live the Dream.” This being said, he’s never let go of what is most important in his life, the Four F’s, Faith, Family, Friends and having Fun. Thus, the book describes the happenings and “isms” that only Jake can tell in his own unique way.

The Last Gallows

“The Last Gallows: John Morgan’s Farewell” is a new dramatized documentary about West Virginia’s last public execution. John F. Morgan was hanged in 1897 for the triple hatchet murder of a Jackson County family. The 1-hour showing in the Ripley High Auditorium begins at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 23 and 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 24. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for students. It is not recommended for children.

African American Life: A Personal Perspective
June 28, 2018

On Thursday, June 28, 2018, Edward Hargro will be the speaker in the second program of the 2018 Block Speaker Series of “African American Life: A Personal Perspective” in the Archives and History Library in the Culture Center in Charleston. The program will begin at 6:00 p.m. and is free and open to the public.
The son of a Tuskegee Airman, Edward Hargro attended Bluefield State College, where he received a bachelor of science degree in physical education and biology. He also played and lettered in football. In 1967, Hargro achieved the rank of lieutenant in the United States Army in Officers Candidate School, and he later served six years in the West Virginia National Guard.
Hargro taught biology at Triadelphia High School from 1967 to 1972, during which time he also served as an assistant coach and was a member of Big Brothers of Wheeling. He was a pharmaceutical sales representative with Ayers Laboratories, 1972-1982, and with Glaxo Smith Kline Pharmaceuticals, 1982-2008.
Participants may park behind the Culture Center after 5:00 p.m. on June 28 and enter the building at the back loading dock area. There also is limited handicapped parking available in the new bus turnaround.

Charleston Metro Band

A free concert on the lawn of the Jackson County Courthouse begins at 8 p.m. on Friday, June 29. The band performs patriotic marches, Broadway tunes and movie hits. The performance is part of the 7-day Independence celebration in Ripley.

Hands on Tamarack: Scratch Art with Pastels
June 30, 2018
— Beckley, Raleigh
Through the use of plaster, oil pastels and a scratching technique, students will create dimensional wall pieces that focus on the use color, line quality and depth.
