  • Barboursville Civil War Days

    May 03, 2019 to May 05, 2019 — Barboursville, Cabell

    Experience the sounds of battle at the annual Barboursville Civil War Days Weekend on May 3-5, 2019 at Barboursville Park in Barboursville, West Virginia. Join us as we commemorate two small battles that occurred in the Village of Barboursville, West Virginia. The original battles took place on July 13, 1861 and Sep. 8, 1862, when this was still Virginia. Barboursville Civil War Days is hosted by Chapman’s Battery Civil War Reenactors, who take part in the event as well. Location Barboursville Park

  • 14th Annual St. Albans Founders Da

    May 11, 2019 — Saint Albans, Kanawha

    The 14th Annual St. Albans Founders Day will be held on Main Street, Saturday, May 11, 2019, from 10 – 4 pm. Sponsored by the St. Albans Founder’s Day Committee and the St. Albans Historical Society, this event brings people to Main Street for food, arts & crafts, plenty of entertainment and concerts and helps to celebrate the history of St. Albans, as well as to promote the downtown businesses. This year the old Herbert’s Music Company Building, at 63 Old Main Plaza, owned by Frank McCormick, will be used for bands who will be playing music from their front porch all day. Don’t miss this fun day on Old Main Street. Lots of food and over 55 vendors with arts and crafts and items for sale.

    Mary Draper Ingles will visit at around 10:45 a.m. and at 2 pm there will be a special showing of “Historic Theaters of WV” at the Alban Arts Center.   • African American Life: A Personal Perspective Block Speaker Series

    May 11, 2019 — Charleston, Kanawha

    On Saturday, May 11, 2019, Dr. Monique M. Chouraeshkenazi will be the first speaker in the 2019 Block Speaker Series of “African American Life: A Personal Perspective” in the Archives and History Library in the Culture Center in Charleston. The program will begin at 3:00 p.m. and is free and open to the public.

    Dr. Chouraeshkenazi was educated at Pratt Elementary School and graduated with honors from Riverside High School in 2002. She spent the next 13 years in the U.S. Air Force but also continued her education. After graduating with honors from American Military University in 2011 with a B.A. in homeland security, she received an M.S. in criminal justice from Boston University in 2013, again graduating with honors. In 2015, she earned a PhD in public policy and administration with a concentration in terrorism, mediation, and peace from Walden University, graduating high honors of 4.0 GPA. Her doctoral thesis, “Qualitative Case Study on F-35 Fighter Production Delays affecting National Security Guidance,” was published in Scholar Works that year.

    Since March 2019, Chouraeshkenazi has been chair of the National Security Program at the Daniel Morgan Graduate School of National Security in Washington, D.C. She also teaches part-time for the School of Graduate and Degree Completion at Tiffin University and at Southern New Hampshire University. An African-American Jewish author, professor, and researcher, she specializes in domestic extremism and global terrorism. She was inducted into Oxford’s Who’s Who in 2016 for “Tier of Excellence” in personal and professional development as an educator, entrepreneur, and leader in homeland and national security and graced the cover of Oxford’s Elite Magazine “Special Edition” in April 2017.

    While serving in the military, Chouraeshkenazi specialized in administration, communications and security management. Among her positions were Chief of the Special Security Office for the 18th Wing Intelligence Unit at Kadena Air Base, Japan; Enlisted Military Assistant and Assistant Noncommissioned Officer-in-Charge for Secretaries Ash Carter, Christine Fox, and Robert Work for the Office of the Deputy Secretary of Defense at The Pentagon; and Military Executive Assistant for former Joint Improvised Explosive Device Defeat Organization Director, Lieutenant General John D. Johnson. She received numerous medals, including Afghanistan Campaign Medal with gold star, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Korean Defense Service Medal, Air Force Expeditionary Service Medal with gold border, NATO Service Medal, and Office of Secretary of Defense Badge.

  • West Virginia Youth Symphony Spring Concert

    May 12, 2019 — Charleston, Kanawha

    The West Virginia Youth Symphony will hold its annual Spring Concert on Sunday, May 12 (Mothers Day!) at 3:00 pm in the University of Charleston Geary Auditorium.

    This concert will feature our 2019 Concerto Competition Winner, Camillo G. Peracchia! He will perform the first movement of the Elgar Cello Concerto. Other concert repertoire will include selections by Shostakovich, Wagner, and Bach.

    Tickets are available for purchase at the door: $10 for adults and FREE for children under 18.

  • Downtown Charleston ArtWalk

    With exciting and unique offerings around every corner, Downtown Charleston ArtWalk celebrates the arts on the third Thursday each month March through December, except in November and June when the event falls on Black Friday and the week of FestivALL, respectively.   • Contemporary Literature from West Virginia

    May 19, 2019 — Charleston, Kanawha WVHC Event

    The May 19 Little Lecture brings Mount St. Mary’s University Provost Dr. Boyd Creasman to MacFarland-Hubbard House for a presentation titled “Contemporary Literature from West Virginia” that draws from his recent book Writing West Virginia. Creasman was an English faculty member and administrator for 27 years at West Virginia Wesleyan College. His research and teaching of Appalachian literature informed his book that was published in 2016 by University of Tennessee Press and the first critical study of literature from the Mountain State to analyze multiple authors.

    Little Lectures are presented on Sunday afternoons at 2:00 p.m. at our headquarters located at 1310 Kanawha Boulevard, East, Charleston, in the parlor of MacFarland-Hubbard House. Seating is limited (thus “Little” Lectures) and reservations are suggested. Admission is $10 per person and includes refreshments after the lecture.     Heritage Days celebrates our Appalachian Heritage with a focus on Appalachian Food, Music, and Art as well as other traditions and stories. The history of the City of Spencer and Roane County will be shared as well as traditions of all West Virginians. May 31-June 1 in Spencer.
