  • 2016 Mountaineer Stampede Rodeo

    April 01, 2016 to April 03, 2016 — Winfield, Putnam

    Southern District 4-H Horse Camp in partnership with the West Virginia High School Rodeo Association will be hosting a High School Rodeo Competition the weekend of April 1-3, 2016 in Winfield, WV at the Winfield Riding Ring. We are excited to be hosting contestants from West Virginia, Virginia, Kentucky, Ohio, and Maryland.

    Participation in rodeo events is limited to contestants who are registered members of a High School Rodeo Association. Spectators are invited to attend all three days of rodeo competition.

    Events will include Barrel Racing, Calf Roping Steer, Wrestling, Team Roping, Bull Riding, Pole Bending, Goat Tying, Breakaway Roping.

    The proceeds from this event will benefit Southern District 4-H Horse Camp, the Camp Virgil Tate Barn Fund, and the WV High School Rodeo Association.

    Admission: $7.00 a day or $12.00 for a weekend pass. Children 5 & under get in free. Tickets will be sold at the gate. No advanced ticket sales.

  • The West Virginia Comedy Festival

    Two sidesplitting nights of homegrown comedy are coming this spring to north central West Virginia.

    Jason A. Young, the Founding Producer and Artistic Director of The Vintage Theatre Company, LLC, cordially invites audiences to the 2nd Annual West Virginia Comedy Festival, April 8-9, 2016, at the Bridgeport Country Club in Bridgeport, West Virginia.

    The brainchild of Young and comedian and arts advocate Steve Goff, The West Virginia Comedy Festival is produced by The Vintage Theatre Company, LLC, and hosted by The Fearless Fools.

    This year’s festival will feature six shows spread across two nights, as well as a Saturday afternoon Improv Summit.

    Developed by the West Virginia Humanities Council and illustrated by West Virginia University graphic design students with financial support from ZMM Architects and Engineers, this traveling exhibit relates the history of the events that have become synonymous with the word feud.   • Creators Talk "Capturing Memories: How to Record Family Histories"

    April 14, 2016 — Charleston, Kanawha

    Oral histories are recorded memories. They can be about early childhood, work experiences, war experiences or family life. It is extremely important for families to record the memories and voices of older generations so those memories are not lost.

    This Creator’s Talk focuses on the basic techniques for interviewing family members and recording oral histories. We’ll discuss how to ask leading questions, how to make your interview subject feel at ease and how to keep an interview on track. It will include excerpts from previously recorded oral histories, along with examples of how to edit and prepare your recordings for sharing.

  • Rails of Yesteryear

    April 17, 2016 — Ripley, Jackson

    Jackson County was once served by two railroads inland from the Ohio River Valley. Train historian Dan Robie will tell about the old Ripley & Mill Creek Valley Railroad and the Ravenswood, Spencer and Glenville Railroad. The program will be at 2 p.m. on April 17 at the historic Alpine Theatre in Ripley. Admission is free.

  • All Aboard!

    April 17, 2016 — Ripley, Jackson

    Railroad history will be the theme at the historic Alpine Theatre in Ripley. Railroad historian Dan Robie will have a presentation about the old Ripley & Mill Creek Valley and Ravenswood, Spencer and Glenville lines at 2 p.m. WV entertainer Mick Souter will be on stage at 4 p.m. with songs and stories in “All Aboard the Iron Horse.” The afternoon is co-sponsored by the Jackson County Historical Society and the Ripley Convention & Visitors Bureau.

Reception of guests and friends at 9:am to 10:45. Displays of CCC memorabilia, 10:45 a.m. Program to honor the legacy of the CCC, their contributions to America, Moment of Silence for those ill or departed, Taps, State of the CCC Museum, National Anthem, recognition of CCC’s attending, Hall of Fame Inductions.   • Archives and History Thursday Lecture: Published Works of Huey Perry

    April 21, 2016 — Charleston, Kanawha

    On Thursday, April 21, 2016, Huey Perry will present “Published Works of Huey Perry” in the Archives and History Library of the Culture Center in Charleston. The program will begin at 6:00 p.m. and is free and open to the public.

    Perry’s first book, “They’ll Cut Off Your Project”: A Mingo County Chronicle (1972), looks at local politics and a War on Poverty project in southern West Virginia in the 1960s. It was listed as one of the top ten political books of the year by Saturday Review. His second book was Blaze Starr: My Life as Told to Huey Perry (1974), the story of the stripper from West Virginia who was involved with Louisiana Governor Earl Long.

    Huey Perry obtained a bachelor’s degree in history and political science from Berea College, where he was vice president of the student association. In 1958, he received a master’s degree in political science from Marshall University. Perry began his career as a high school teacher in Mingo County and in 1965 became director of the Mingo County Economic Opportunity Commission project. He also has been an inventor and businessman.

    Participants may park behind the Culture Center after 5:00 p.m. on April 21 and enter the building at the back loading dock area. There also is limited handicapped parking available in the new bus turnaround.

  • Feast of the Ramson

    April 23, 2016 — Richwood, Nicholas

    Richwood’s “Feast of the Ramson” has been described as “the granddaddy of ALL Appalachian Ramp Feeds.” Legend has it that the first PUBLIC ramp feed was derived from a private meal, attended by thirteen ramp lovers. At this small gathering, the men decided to “go public” the following year.

    Please join us on April 23, 2016, 10:30 A.M. to 3:30 P. M., at the Richwood High School for our Feast of the Ramson. There will be live music, entertainment, an Art and Craft Show and a ramp dinner.

  • Ramps and Rail Festival

    April 30, 2016 — Elkins, Randolph

    The Eighth Annual Ramps and Rail Festival will be held on April 30, 2016. The festival continues to grow each year and the Depot hoped everyone had an amazing experience and will come back again next year! People tried out different ramp-themed foods and listened to live music, enjoyed the craft vendors, and voted for their favorite vendors. This event keeps growing, we had about 2,000 people attend this year, which was great since it rained for part of the day!

    Each year the festivities start at 10am and continue until 5pm. This year there will be live performances by Seth Maynard Jazz Quartet, The Franks Family Music Show, and the Hardly Ever. Food vendors concocted some delicious ramp-themed foods, like ramp burgers, ramperoni rolls, ramp chili and ramp risotto with shrimp. There were about fifty different food and craft booths at the festival. The Durbin & Greenbrier Valley Railroad offers train rides to those who wanted take one of the first rides of the year.

  • Fort Ashby Day

    April 30, 2016 — Fort Ashby, Mineral WVHC Event

    The Ashby’s Fort Museum is presenting “Fort Ashby Day” on Saturday, April 30, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with special musical guest Greg Latta.

    There will be a full day of activities throughout the village of Fort Ashby, including yard sales at various locations. Trinity United Methodist Church will be having a bake sale and other food for sale, as well as a yard sale.

    The Ashby’s Fort Museum will be hosting a variety of re-enactors, craftspeople, artisans, and 18th century children’s games, as well as providing tours. Greg Latta, noted area musician, will be performing between 1-3 p.m.

    Fort Ashby Day is sponsored in part by the Friends of the Fort, the Fort Ashby Chapter NSDAR, and the West Virginia Humanities Council.
