  The West Virginia Symphony Orchestra’s “Where Music Meets the Humanities” Lecture Series will be held at the Clay Center to help build public dialogue around music history, theory, philosophy, and criticism. This lecture will be based on the history, theory, and philosophy according to vocalists. Speakers LiAnne Coble, Paul Kreider, and Maestro Grant Cooper will highlight different areas of where music meets the humanities.

• Little Lecture - A Place Called Solid: West Virginia Re-Imagined in the Novel

  March 06, 2016 — Charleston, Kanawha WVHC Event

  Glenn Taylor is among West Virginia’s most prominent contemporary authors. His book The Ballad of Trenchmouth Taggart was a National Book Critics Circle Award finalist. Taylor’s writing is rooted in West Virginia with Trenchmouth Taggart, The Marrowbone Marble Company, and A Hanging at Cinder Bottom all set in the Mountain State. He will discuss the potential of the novel in helping re-tool the public consciousness toward a more complex understanding of our state and its people.

  The Little Lectures are informal programs featuring speakers on a variety of topics. Programs are presented on Sunday afternoons at 2:00 p.m. at our headquarters located at 1310 Kanawha Boulevard, East, Charleston, in the parlor of MacFarland-Hubbard House.

• Archives and History Thursday Lecture: Growing Up in Charleston and Other Lesser Known Facts

  March 17, 2016 — Charleston, Kanawha

  On Thursday, March 17, 2016, Jerry Waters will present “Growing Up in Charleston and Other Lesser Known Facts” in the Archives and History Library of the Culture Center in Charleston. The program will begin at 6:00 p.m. and is free and open to the public.

  Jerry Waters was born and raised in Charleston, West Virginia, on the back side of town, and he has been a sailor, radio announcer, newspaper photographer, and fire department captain. He will talk about Charleston from the perspective of those experiences and will include a number of images in his presentation.

  Waters’ love of photography and local history goes back to 1968, when he took photos along the path of the newly arriving interstate. A collector of photographs for years, he provided images for volumes I and II of Kanawha County Images by Stan Cohen and Richard Andre, and he also designed the cover for Vol. II. Seven years ago, Waters launched mywvhome.com, a website primarily devoted to area photos. Now retired, Waters spends his time adding to his website and collecting photos.

  Participants may park behind the Culture Center after 5:00 p.m. on March 17 and enter the building at the back loading dock area. There also is limited handicapped parking available in the new bus turnaround.

• 2016 Maple Syrup Festival

  West Virginia has a long history of sugar making. The Indians made syrup first. They threw hot rocks into hollowed-out logs that were filled with sap. The early settler quickly learned to make the sweet stuff and use it as their main source of sugar. Today, maple syrup and sugar are widely used in cooking, baking, and as topping. Join us for a full weekend of activities celebrating this tradition each year on the third full weekend in March!
